Concert by Bakalina Velika featuring ancient fir instruments

Apr 20

Bakalina Velika, a experimental world music band from the Tolmin area, will perform a concert at the Gala Hala venue at Metelkova, the Ljubljana alternative art centre.

On the occasion they will present the first musical instruments made from the 6,500-year-old silver fir tree found during a conservation project in a man-made watering hole early in 2023.

The band are working on their new album and will present some of their new songs, along with those from their previous albums. They released their latest one Zviezdna srebruo in April 2022 and then embarked on a tour of the country.

Evolving from a duo featuring singer and songwriter Jani Kutin and accordion player Renata Lapanja, the band features experienced musicians from acclaimed world music, jazz and rock ensembles.

Their music combines elements of diverse genres, from alt-rock to unconventional chanson and folk to jazz and experimentation. The lyrics grapple with eternal questions about human existence in nature, the universe and the mystical that only music can express.
