Slovenian PM Expects Pro-EU Orientation in Serbia

European Union,  08 Jun 2012

Prime Minister, Janez Janša, said that he does not expect any significant changes in Serbia’s foreign policy following the victory of nationalist candidate, Tomislav Nikolić, in the presidential election.

According to Janša, the EU remains the only realistic option for Serbia and other Western Balkan countries. “We were happy to hear the pro-European statement by Serbia’s new president, Mister Nikolić and there is no reason not to believe his words,” said Janša, whilst attending the NATO summit in Chicago. He said that the election of Nikolić did not go unnoticed among European members of NATO and although unexpected, would not mean any major changes in the relationship between the EU and Serbia. “Maybe this outcome is more important in terms of changes in domestic politics. Regarding the pro-European orientation of Serbia, no serious changes are expected, maybe some steps will even come sooner”.
