Serious Damage Reported After Wednesday Night Storms

Society,  13 Jul 2012  / By STA

Hailstorms that ravaged northwestern and central parts of Slovenia on Wednesday night caused several million euros worth of damage, preliminary estimates by insurance companies suggest.

Severe damage caused by flooding and hail has been reported from Ljubljana, Bovec (N), the Prekmurje region (NW) and the Maribor area (NW).

The most dramatic reports came from Bovec, showing thick layers of walnut-sized hail that had to be removed with machinery in some parts.

Several basements were flooded in Ljubljana, trees needed to be removed from roads, while crop damage was reported from Pomurje.

Insurance companies are still collecting data on the damage, with only the biggest, Zavarovalnica Triglav, putting forward a first estimate of EUR 2.5m in damage to vehicles and EUR 1.5m to buildings.
