All Hail the Autumn Season!

07.09.2007

By Helena Marko

Yes, the tourists are slowly decreasing in numbers and the locals are returning home tanned like leather, but are we about to give in and hide under the duvet yet? No way!

September is here and though we cannot babble about sipping cocktails on summer beach terraces anymore and taking a cardigan with you has become obligatory on those fresh mornings and evenings, this in no way implies the social happenings, so abundant during the summer months, are now over. On the contrary – club life is coming back with a vengeance, as are the first indoor concerts, performances and exhibitions. No worries about being bored or depressed should be crossing your mind. So, where to go and what to do?

Return to the Middle Ages
Medieval Day in Ljubljana is a traditional festival featuring performances by knights’ and theatre groups in medieval costumes. Expect some live sword action and concerts of medieval and Renaissance music, plus a colourful medieval street market. Follow the sounds of the drums and you cannot miss them!

8th-9th September, Old Town centre and Ljubljana Castle

7th World Festival of Sautéed Potatoes
Yes, you have read that correctly – it is indeed a festival dedicated to the joys of cooking and eating potatoes. Furthermore, it is organized by the Society Fighting for Recognition of Sautéed Potatoes as a Main Dish. I hope you are rolling on the floor with laughter by now, but it is all true, and you can even become a member! Anyway, if you happen to be near Beltinci in the Prekmurje region on that day, go for it! There is no admission, and you will be able to taste sautéed potatoes in no less than 39 different ways, prepared by chefs, cooks and amateur cooks from Slovenia and abroad – for free! Side dishes and drinks will be offered at very reasonable prices by the kind and hospitable locals. There will be the proper Slovenian countryside entertainment programme as well.

8th September, Lipa pri Beltincih

NY House Returns to the Coast
As a DJ, remixer, producer and co-owner of Def Mix Productions (one of the world’s most successful dance production companies, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year), David Morales has made a mark all his own. David hails from the streets of Brooklyn, which influences his unique style behind the DJ booth as well as in the studio; a style that brings guts and accessibility to music. Get your groove on!

15th September, Ambasada Gavioli, Izola

The Delicate Sounds of Chamber Music
And now for something completely different. Remember those costume film dramas and the crystalline sounds of the harpsichord played by noble ladies? Go back in time and visit the International Chamber Music Festival with best musicians in Maribor. They will also prepare their concerts in the form of music workshops in various Slovenian towns, with works played from the Baroque and other classical periods.

14th – 29th September, Maribor

Utrip – Urban Art Street Festival
Klub K4, Ljubljana’s longest running alternative club, is opening a new season in a fresh way – outside, on the streets of the Ljubljana Old Town! The two-day day mini festival will present urban art of both Slovene and international visual and performance artists and musicians – interactive installations, flyer exhibitions, concerts, workshops, performances – along the Šuštarski most bridge and the Ljubljanica River embankments. Do you want to buy or sell some old vinyl records? Bring them with you or come to pick them up at the vinyl fair! In the event of rain, the happening will be transferred inside the club. The festival will be concluded by an audio-video performance of one brilliant UK musician that goes by the name Vector Lovers (even though he is just one, hmm!). If you want to hear achingly beautiful celestial electronic music as if played by crystals and Kraftwerk robots with soul, do not miss this event!

13th – 14th September, Ljubljana Old Town

27th Biennale of Graphic Arts
The 27th Biennial of Graphic Arts brings eight views on art prints, with the common theme of the exhibitions being the reproducibility of art, which has changed the way we understand the notions of the copy and the original. Reproducibility has led to multiple productions, wider accessibility, and an artwork’s ability to be simultaneously present in different situations and socio-political environments. The exhibitions of reproducible art at the 27th Graphic Arts Biennial present a variety of art forms, from traditional printmaking to printed matter, video, photography, and computer- and Web-based art. For a month and a half, Ljubljana will be transformed into the graphic arts capital of the world. One of the most interesting exhibitions will present an overview of works by the former haute couture and currently extravagant costume designer Alan Hranitelj. The exhibition will show original as well as re-mastered theatre, opera, film costumes designed for more than 140 different shows over the last twenty years, as well as dress items, dresses for special occasions and fashion accessories.

Until 28th October, various venues around Ljubljana
