US President Arrives
10.06.2008
US President George W. Bush arrived at the Ljubljana international airport yesterday evening for the EU-US Summit that kicks off a European tour that will take him to Germany, Italy, the Vatican, France, and the United Kingdom.
Bush was greeted by Prime Minister Janez Jansa, the current president of the European Council, who will be Bush's host today at the EU-US Summit that will also feature European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
The key issues expected to be discussed at the summit include climate change, trade, the fight against terrorism and global crisis spots. The declaration to be adopted at the summit is expected to include the whole spectrum of transatlantic cooperation, but major breakthroughs are not expected.
Security has been tightened for the summit: a motorway section pass the venue, the Brdo pri Kranju estate, will be closed along with a number of local roads around Brdo. The air space over the estate will also be closed.
Small protests have been announced by various groups in Ljubljana, Kranj, Marinor and Koper, but there will be no single big rally.
