Ballooning Accident Death Toll Reaches Six

The death toll from the 23 August hot air balloon crash near Ljubljana has climbed to six, after a 59-year-old man with severe burns died at the UKC Ljubljana hospital, the Ljubljana Police Administration said in a press release on Monday.

As many as four people died as the hot-air balloon crashed in flames, while the remaining 28 people aboard all sustained injuries. Last week, the fifth victim died, succumbing to severe burns.

An investigation into the crash is still ongoing. However, initial findings indicate that it might have happened due to low-altitude wind shear - fast changes in wind direction and speed - caused by storms developing further north.

The balloon hit the ground several times, crashing against a tree in the process, catching fire and coming to a halt 117 metres away from the tree, according to a preliminary report on the accident.

Last week, the UKC said that six people injured in the crash remained hospitalised, including four who were in intensive care and two who were under observation.

Hot balooning has never been proven to be very safe.Sadly, people ignore the fact that baloon flight always remains at the mercy of the weather conditions.
